Description:
The foundation programme in Science is intended to provide the
required basic knowledge for students to register for the level 3 courses of the Bachelor of Science Degree programme.

The following courses are available:

English:
LSE 1603 English for Science and Technology (compulsory for all students)

Mathematics:
MAF 1301 Pure Mathematics (Compulsory for Physical Science students) MAF 1302 Applied Mathematics (Compulsory for Physical Science
students)
MAF 2301 Pure Mathematics (Compulsory for Physical Science students) MAF 2302 Applied Mathematics (Compulsory for Physical Science
students)

Botany:
PSF 1305 Botany
PSF 2305 Botany

Zoology:
PSF 1306 Zoology
PSF 2306 Zoology

Physics:
PSF 2602 Physics

Chemistry:
PSF 2603 Chemistry.

Assessment is by assignments and end of course examination.

Entrance qualifications: No formal educational qualifications are required of those seeking registration for the Foundation Courses. However, an educational attainment equivalent to passes in six
subjects including Mathematics and Science at the General Certificate of Education (Ordinary Level) Examination will be an advantage.
A student who has obtained one or more passes at the General
Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) Examination and certain other qualifications in Applied Mathematics, Botany, Chemistry, Physics, Pure Mathematics and Zoology may seek exemption from
foundation courses in the relevant disciplines.


Languages:

Sinhala, Tamil and English

Media and methods employed: Printed text, audio cassettes, video cassettes.
Printed correspondence texts prepared by/for institution, laboratory work, audio cassettes, video cassettes, day schools (a minimum of 2 on each course).

Administrative information:
This is a 2 academic year (minimum) programme.

To register for courses beyond the Foundation Programme students must obtain 4 credits at this level. The maximum number of credits a student is permitted to register for in an academic year is 2.
